How are they made?

The straight answer is that Lab Grown diamonds are made in laboratories using science and high heat temperatures (upwards of 1300 Celsius). Scientists use either an HPHT (High-Pressure, High Temperature) approach or the CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) approach. Both approaches introduce carbon into a high temperature-controlled environment, closely mimicking the natural process in a much shorter period. 

How are they graded?

Since Lab Grown diamonds are the same as the natural diamonds we're used to, they are graded in the same way, using the same scales and 4Cs. What makes things more interesting, you will consistently find that the Clarity and Colour are of higher quality, ranging in the VS and G/H range, respectively.

1950s

• Laboratory-grown diamonds are first produced using the high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) method for industrial purposes and are used in telecommunications, laser optics, abrasives, etc.

1970s

• General Electric researchers create the first gem-quality laboratory-grown diamonds. They are of high enough clarity and large enough size to be used as gems in jewelry.

1980s

• Manufacturers grow commercial quantities of gem-quality laboratory-grown diamond crystals. These lab-created diamonds are initially mostly small and yellowish or brownish, but their quality improves over the ensuing decades.

2000s

• Diamonds are created using the chemical-vapour deposition (CVD) method, which requires lower pressure and temperatures than the HPHT method.

2010s

• Colorless lab-made diamonds are commercially available in the jewelry market. Both HPHT and CVD continue to be popular methods of laboratory-grown diamond production.
