Gold: Yellow, White, Rose Gold
Whether you choose your band in white or rose, it all starts with traditional yellow gold. Specific alloys are mixed to get the colour white or rose, different from the alloys mixed with yellow gold. Our Four Facets to Gold article explains that it takes alloys like copper and palladium to get the desired colour.
What does this mean to you? After some time, wearing your band will show its inherent purity. With white and rose gold, you'll see a slight hue of yellow. That hue is pure yellow gold expressing its natural colour and beauty through the other metals.
DON'T lose your diamonds!
Those who choose a band set with diamonds will want to take special care. It doesn't matter what style of setting, whether 4-prong, micro-pave or bezel, how you treat your jewels will dictate how long they will last.
Nevertheless, it's essential to consider that settings use a small amount of metal to hold a diamond or gemstone. The delicate pieces are fragile. In addition, they are the most exposed part of your jewellery. The truth is you can't avoid everything. Instead, monitor your settings for wear and degradation. This way, you can be proactive and repair instead of reactive and replace, saving you a ton in between.
On your own, all you need to do is take a good look at what's holding your gems in place. If the material is thinning out or the gemstone has room to move, your ring needs attention. When you visit our showroom in Richmond Hill, our in-house goldsmith will typically give your ring an inspection to determine any areas that require attention.
What about that plating?
If you didn't know, now you do. Even gold gets a layer of plating upon finishing. We call it the "fresh out of the showroom" finish. The way your jewels glow the first time you see them is unmistakable and unforgettable, especially with wedding bands. If you want to keep the plating, you just need to be more attentive. You have to remove your ring during specific moments, moments like:
- Sanitizing or washing your hands
- Kitchen working including the dishwashing
- House or garden work
- Harsh work environments
From a bird's eye view, it's typically challenging to see imperfections in any of these circumstances. However, with some close inspection, damage can be visible. Another example is precious and semi-precious gemstones that scratch very easily. If the jewellery can't handle it, give it a break, or it won't last forever.
